Which Is India’s Fastest EV charger and Where Is It Located?

It’s common knowledge that the Level 1 chargers can take up to 40 to 50 hours to fully charge a battery electric vehicle from ground zero, to speak in layman terms.

However, the duration of charging a plug-in hybrid vehicle is around 4 to 5 hours (from empty).

It’s also known that Electrify America DC fast chargers happen to be among the fastest chargers around, if not in absolute terms!

According to many news outlets and automotive publications, Electrify America DC fast chargers (the name behind most public fast-charging stations in the US) are, in fact, the fastest available in the market.

But have you wondered what might be the fastest EV charger in the Indian market, miles away from balmy Californian sunshine and maybe not so adrift after all from the reach of the Chinese dragon, the two bustling zones of the electric car revolution?

That being said, it helps to know that Kia India, only a few hours ago, installed what is making news as the “fastest EV car charger” in India.

However, what is the charger about and where exactly has it been installed?

The 240 kWh EV charger has been installed in the southern city of Kochi, in Kerala.

Interestingly, Kerala is a market where plenty of EVs has begun to run on roads that, much like many a mainstream Indian city a while ago, were home to only fuel-guzzling cars.

On that note, some of the noted EVs that are already running in cities like Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are- Mahindra eVerito, MG ZS EV, Tata Nexon, and Hyundai Kona, to quote a few.

That being said, in case you missed out on what seems to be a promising development in the Shashi Tharoor state, no fewer than 145 charging stations were already getting ready starting July this year.

To further elaborate on the Kia-installed charger, now apparently, the fastest in the country to charge an EV, the following is what Zee News had to report on the developing story:

“The fast EV charger is open to all EV owners in India, and not just Kia EV6 owners to have access to fast charging options. Customers can avail of this charging facility at the Kochi dealership by paying per usage. Kia India, in July 2022, launched India’s fastest charger at that time, a ‘150kWh’ electric charger for passenger cars, in Gurgaon, which now becomes the fastest EV charger in North India.”

At a time when there’s hardly a week in India’s EV journey where something exciting doesn’t crop up albeit, in a space where a lot should have already happened, Kia’s initiative is indeed an impressive step forwards.

A milestone if you’d like in a journey where the likes of Tata Motors, Mahindra, MG, and up-and-coming names like E-mobility start-ups like Pravaig are already turning heads.
